SX8750 SWANNATON ROAD 673-1/6/250 (South West side) 19/02/90 Summerhouse approximately 75 metres to south-west of Stokecliff (Formerly Listed as: SWANNATON ROAD Summerhouse about 60 metres south west of Stoke Cliff)

GV II

Summerhouse, called "the temple" by the residents of Stokecliff. c1820-30. Plastered stone rubble, roof material has gone. PLAN: Terraced into steep hillside, the back part enclosed by stone walls, the front part open like a simple portico in antis. EXTERIOR: Built to resemble a classical temple. Roman Doric style. The front is an open 3-bay colonnade of timber columns (in August 1990, the outer 2 had collapsed and the middle 2 were leaning) to a Doric frieze with mutules, triglyphs and the rest under a false pediment, the front gable end of the roof. The roof has no cladding. INTERIOR: The plastered stone walls contain a series of round-headed niches, 3 on the back wall and one to each side wall. These could have been used for statues or night lights. There is the remains of an old wooden bench, probably not an original feature. Boarded common rafter roof.
