Inscription just below cornice state that it was ‘Post & Telegraph Office”.
Built as such in 1875-77 to design of J. Williams of the Office of Works. Altered late C20.
Ashlar with C20 tilehanging to right return. Roof not visible.
Plinth, rusticated ground and first floors, ground floor band,
dentillated main cornice with modillions. Windows are plain
sashes. four storeys; 4-window range. On the first floor, four
windows with moulded surrounds and triangular pediments on
brackets, all with small linked balconies with balustrades.
Above, four windows with moulded surrounds on moulded sill band,
with cornices on brackets. Cornice between floors. Above
again, four windows with moulded surrounds and continuous lintel.
Ground floor has to right an entrance with panelled pilasters
and long ornamented brackets carrying a panelled cornice.
Stone doorcase with fluted coved surround, moulded 6-panel
double doors, panelled lintel and overlight. To left, three tall
windows with moulded surrounds, panelled reveals and
overlights.
