Retaining walls and steps to terrace in front of Bowes Museum (qv), with heraldic beasts. c1885. By J Pellechet. For John Bowes. Ashlar. Rusticated walls retain terrace the full length of the main building of the museum and 2 flights of side steps at each end. Similar walls retain terrace behind second flights of steps. Front wall has blind arcade, the end and central arches to niches flanked by shallow stepped pilasters. All arches have keyed heads and channelled voussoirs. Keys rise through entablature which supports balustrade of turned balusters and shallow piers, with corniced coping. Similar front balustrades and blind end return balustrades to steps. Approx. 2m behind balustrade are 2 heraldic beasts, approx one metre high, bearing shields.
