BIRKENHEAD

SJ3289 MORPETH DOCK 789-1/9/107 Morpeth Dock

II

Dock and wharf walls. 1847, reconstructed and enlarged 1868. By J.M. Rendel, then J.B. Hartley, engineers. Granite-faced, with some cast-iron dock furniture. Main basin linked to Mersey by lock, also stone-lined, the stone laid to inter-lock for greater rigidity. The raised surfaces of the wharves contain cast-iron hatches which gave access to the hydraulic power system used to operate the gates etc., installed in the 1880's. Flights of steps lead down to the water. The dock formed part of the first phase of development at Birkenhead which was largely re-designed and reconstructed in the second major phase of development during the 1860's.
