Details
ASHOVER SK3463 BUTTS ROAD 1264-0/11/16 (East side) 08/12/88 Stable Block to north of Butts Grange GV II Stable block. Dated 1790, remodelled or rebuilt early to-mid C19, and converted to a dwelling in 1990. Regularly coursed squared Coal Measures Sandstone with ashlar dressings, coped gables with plain kneelers and a concrete tile roof. South-east elevation: 2 storeys, 5 bays, with 5 ground-floor openings. The outermost doors are double openings, that to the south-west end having a massive lintel spanning the opening, and a heavily quoined surround. The opening to the north-east end has an ashlar segmental arch with voussoirs and a keyblock. Both openings have vertically planked doors. 2 single doorways to inner bays, both with semicircular arched heads with key blocks and imposts, and flush jambs, one with a semicircular glazed fanlight, the other with timber boarding infill with vents. A central doorway has a massive lintel and a quoined surround. 4 first-floor flush-mullioned 2-light windows, with fixed lights having glazing bars, some also with top-hung vents. Gabled dormer dovecote to centre, with coped gables, ashlar facing to apex, with diagonally set 4-paned square window, above 2 levels of projecting perches with semicircular landing platforms, leading onto 5 entry holes at each level. North-west elevation with central doorway, lintel of which bears 1790 date in diamond surround; 2 lean-to structures, one on either side of doorway, with flagged theshold between: to south-west end, flight of stone steps to first-floor doorway. South-west gable has blocked first-floor taking-in doorway with quoined surround; now filled with masonry.
