Gatehouse to militia barracks, now 4 houses. 1855-65, converted 1980s. Roughly coursed and squared sandstone rubble and dressings, with ashlar ridge and front external stacks, and tiled hipped roofs; Picturesque Tudorbethan Revival style. 2-room plan.
EXTERIOR: single storey and attic; 5:4-window range. Asymmetrical front has a battered plinth to a cill band, a wide central pointed entrance archway, with two 2-centre arched windows to the left containing Tudor-arched lights with patterned tympana and polychrome voussoirs, and 3 gabled half-dormers above. A round stair tower projects to right of entrance arch with narrow stepped lights and a conical leaded roof and finial, and a large exterior stack to the right on corbels. Lower range beyond with 4 lancet windows linking to a small corner watch tower with arrow slits and corbelled parapet. Elevation to square has attic lit by a small gable with 3-light mullioned and transomed window to left of entrance arch, and 3 gabled half-dormers to the right, each a single-light window. Ground floor has a 3-light mullioned and transomed window to lower left, and doorway to right with pointed archway surmounted by mullioned overlight. Further doorway ill passageway. Windows have metal casements.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: to the left of the gate-house on Crompton Road elevation, a tall perimeter wall of coursed and square rubble with string course terminates in round watch tower at angle of site, with arrow slits and corbelled parapet.
HISTORY: erected following the Militia Act (1852) to provide a secure store for equipment, an armoury, and NCO's barracks. Many local militia used the barracks as an emblematic focus for the regiment. Macclesfield is not only one of the largest, but also one of the most picturesque of the militia barracks, being a richly-detailed composition of considerable architectural invention.
