GV II*

Unitarian church. 1869-71, by Thomas Worthington. Coursed sandstone rubble, slate roof. Early English style. Nave, north and south aisles, free-standing steeple attached to north aisle close to west end, chancel with transepts. The 4-stage tower with angle-buttresses, string-courses, embattled parapet with corner gargoyles and tall slender broach spire, has a 2-centred arched north doorway, one and 2 lancets to the next 2 stages, paired 2-light belfry windows with cusped lights, and lucarnes to the base of the spire. The 6-bay nave has 3-light clerestory windows, and the buttressed aisles 2-centred arched 2-light windows. Transepts of chancel have similar windows. Large east and west windows. Gable copings with kneelers and apex crosses. Interior (Pevsner): aisle arcades of sandstone on columns of pink polished granite; plastered walls. History: commissioned and endowed by Richard Peacock, engineer and partner in locomotive-building firm of Beyer and Peacock; cost »12,000; demonstrates ecumenical nature of later C19 Unitarianism.
