GV II*

House with front steps and railings. Mid C18 with c1796 alterations. Altered for Sir John Hullock, to accommodate fellow judges on the circuit. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar plinth, quoins and tooled dressings; rubble left return and rear, with ashlar rear extension; roof of stone slates with stone gable copings and ashlar chimneys. EXTERIOR: basement and 3 storeys; symmetrical 5-window range. Paired side steps up to central 8-panel door in pedimented architrave with scroll brackets and pulvinated frieze. Early C19 glazing bars to sashes in architraves, with ground-floor and first-floor sill bands. Eaves gutter cornice and coped roof parapet. Rusticated quoins. Tall end chimneys with plinths and cornices. Spike-headed railings to area in front of basement rise up steps to door. Rear elevation shows bowed ashlar extension breaking forward at left, and extruded porch added with door and sidelights. Plain stone surrounds to sashes with glazing bars, tripartite sash above porch and on alternate floors in bowed wing. INTERIOR: has good early C19 doors, architraves and cornices, with some earlier dado rails and doors, and altered staircase with 2 turned balusters per tread. Window shutters visible to most windows. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: spike-headed railings to area in front of basement rise up steps to entrance. HISTORY: plaque on front of building records ownership of Sir John Hullock, judge, and his improvements to the house in order to entertain his fellow judges.
