4/62 St Michael Penkivel School - earth closet buildings, boundary wall and railings GV II
School, 2 earth closet buildings, boundary wall and railings. Circa 1888. Slatestone rubble with granite dressings and Delabole slate roof with shaped ridge tiles and gable ends. Main lateral granite stacks and granite gable stacks with octagonal shafts to wings. Tudor style. Cruciform plan formed by 2 schoolrooms and small room in each wing. Single storey with basement under east wing. South entrance and road front : high central schoolroom gable end with central 3-light granite, mullioned window with transom and original wooden sashes with glazing bars and original tilting vents; granite hoodmould; cruciform ventilator and projecting verge and eaves. Granite coped plinth throughout. Left gable with entrance for girls left and boys right. Ground slopes down to right, providing space for low basement with flat-headed doorway. Wings are identical above this level with arched doorway in angle and adjoining arch headed 3-light mullions with original wooden sashes 4 panes each and slit ventilators over. Open, central, octagonal bellcote with moulded eaves under ogee shaped lead roof surmounted by weather vane. Interior has moulded arch braced roof structure with moulded purlins. Contemporary girls and boys detached rubble and granite earth closet buildings with steep pitched Delabole slate roofs. Boys closet has urinal wing. Original rubble boundary walls with granite dressings and contemporary iron railings and gates to south side. School, earth closet buildings and boundary walls to south all form a group.
