Former Pilot office. 1819, with mid C19 alterations. By John Earle.
Brick with painted ashlar dressings. Roof not visible. Plinth,
ground floor impost band, sill bands to second and third
floors, moulded main cornice, moulded eaves. 3 storeys plus
attics; 3x3 windows.
Queen Street front has a slightly projecting entrance bay.
Central 12-pane sash with moulded surround and panelled sill,
flanked by single 15-pane sashes with cornices on brackets.
Above, a 9-pane sash with a simpler surround and corbelled
sill, flanked by similar sashes with lintels. Above again, a
rendered panel with stepped parapet and the inscription "Pilot
Office", flanked by single 6-pane sashes with lintels. Below,
recessed Roman Doric portico with 2 round columns flanked by 2
square 3/4 columns, entablature and dentillated cornice.
Fielded panelled double door with panelled recess and
overlight. On either side, a plain sash with rebated
round-arched head. Beyond, to right. a slightly recessed
single-storey addition with a plain sash.
Left return, to Nelson Street, has 3 plain sashes with
cornices on brackets and above, 3 smaller plain sashes with
lintels. Attic storey has to right a rounded corner with a
3-light window and to its left, a similar 3-light bow window.
In the centre, a 2-light casement and to left, a 6-pane sash.
Below, Central plain sash with pilastered surround and cornice
on brackets, flanked by single plain sashes with rebated
round-arched heads. INTERIOR has a wooden cantilever oval
staircase with spindle balusters and ramped scrolled handrail.
