GV II
Pair of shops. Mid to later C19, remodelled and shop-fronts added in late C19. Painted brick with rusticated stone quoins to the centre, plate glass shop windows in frames of wood and cast-iron; slate roof. Double-depth with long back extensions. Two storeys in a 3-bay composition with a narrow centre which breaks forward slightly and is divided between the two; a moulded cornice, blocking course and shallow central pediment. The principal features of interest are the shop fronts, that to No.8 occupying the original ground floor left of the centre and that to No.9 entirely replacing the original ground floor and extending it out to the right, and replacing most of the 1st floor also. No.8 has an elegant projected double-fronted shop front with a recessed entrance flanked by bay windows of plate glass with curved corners, each with 2 slender colonettes in Ionic style and overlights with rectilinear glazing bars which form a rectangular panel in the centre of each light, including the curved returns and the overlight of the original outer doorway which links them. (To the right of the shop-front is an altered doorway which had a pilasterd architrave until recently). No.9 has a much wider double-fronted and 2-storey shop front which is symmetrical (in itself), with a deeply recessed central entrance flanked by very wide plate glass windows at ground floor and a narrower tripartite window above, the entrance and all the windows having slender columns and ogee-shaped tracery to the heads. An unusual survival. Forms group with Market Hall in Square.
