Old Church House Cottages
II
2 cottages (Nos 2 & 3 in one ownership) formerly church hall
and parish brewhouse. Late C16, in existence by c1574. Built
of Isle of Wight stone rubble rendered. Slate roof, formerly
thatched, 3 brick chimney- stacks. Right side gable end with
kneelers and mullioned surrounds with hood moulding. 5 C19
casements and 3 plain later doors. Plinth. No. 1 was formerly
a brewhouse for church ales. Interior has square framing and
massive chamfered beam with lambs tongue stops. 1st floor has
a plank door with a carving of a Napoleonic period 3 masted
ship. No. 2 was formerly the parish bakehouse and has a
cambered brick arch to inglenook and arch to bread oven. No 3
has a stone fireplace with 4 centred arch and chamfered beam.
There is documentary evidence of a house on the site in 1370.
This was a church house where meetings were held and ale was
brewed.
