TA02NE SPRING BANK WEST 680-1/8/364 (North side) Gateway and boundary walls at General Cemetery

Cemetery gateway and boundary walls. 1847. By Cuthbert Brodrick. Ashlar and yellow brick with stone dressings. Gateway has 3 cross-gabled Gothic piers with cusped ogee-headed niches, and stepped broaches with finials. Pair of large traceried cast-iron gates and to right, a smaller single gate. Adjoining incurved boundary wall has chamfered coping and closely spaced brick piers with rockfaced stone caps. This building is an early work of this well known architect. (Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Yorkshire: York and The East Riding: Harmondsworth: 1972-: 288).
