DARTINGTON SX7861 - SX7961 COTT ROAD, SHINNER'S BRIDGE 13/117 Newhouses Nos 1,2 3 and 5 including pigsty immediately east of Nos 4 and 5
GV II
Row of seven cottages, converted into 3, and with pigsty. Circa late C17, converted into 3 cottages and extended at right end in C20. Local limestone rubble. Steeply pitched slate roof with gabled ends and early crested ridge tiles over Nos 4 and 5. Rendered stone rubble axial and gable end stacks with slate weatherings and tapered tops. Plan: Row of 1-room plan cottages; the axial and gable end stacks heat the room on each floor, the ground floor fireplace apparently had a bread oven. The front doorway may have been for direct entry to the rear and there are now back doorways at first floor level. Converted into 3 cottages probably in C20 and extended by one bay at the right end of No 5 in C20. Exterior: First floor windows in small slate hung gables. Various casements: Nos 1 and 2 retain their C19 2 and 3 light casements with glazing bars and their plank doors and is slate hung below the centre first floor window. No 3 has all C20 casements and C20 door and open timber porch. Nos 4 and 5 (Orchard Cottage) have various C19/20 2 and 3 light casements and a C20 plank door with shallow stone porch to left; at right end a l-bay extension in matching style with small slate hung gable, but with C20 garage on ground floor. Interior: No 3 has chamfered light scantling cross beams and stone newel staircase to side of stack with cambered timber door head at bottom of stairs. Nos 4 and 5 have chamfered timber fireplace lintel and light scantling rough cross beam. Roofs of Nos 3, 4 and 5 have collars lapped and pegged to straight principals and trenched purlins; the roof space not inspected. Interior of Nos 1 and 2 not inspected. Including at rear of Nos 4 and 5 a small pigsty: stone rubble with pyramidal slate roof; a small square on plan single cell building with doorway on one side.
