Details

SOUTH STREET 1. 5191 (West Side) No 50 (National Westminster Bank) SY 6990 7/295 II GV 2. 1901. Architect: Sir George Oatley. Ashlar Bath stone. 3 storeys and attics. Deep entablature with dentilled cornice above ground floor, taking giant order of 4 attached Ionic columns with entasis, which in turn takes eaves entablature with dentilled cornice and balustrade masking roof. 6 ranges of sashes, those on ground floor round-arched. Ground floor. 3 left hand bays flanked by polygonal buttresses with elaborate scrolls on top, between which is a segmental relieving arch (with cartouche attached to its apex). Next 2 windows have blocked architrave surrounds. Right hand bay has 10-panelled double doors with segmental fanlight, in deep moulded reveals (also with applied cartouche), flanked by polygonal buttresses which take huge ornamental consoles supporting moulded and dentilled stone hood, flat but breaking upwards in segmental curve. Above hood, buttresses terminate in elaborate scrolls like 2 left hand bays, while ground floor entablature breaks forward. 1st floor. 2 left hand bays break forward of the giant order, on this and 2nd floor. 2nd bay breaks forward again slightly in advance of 1st and 3rd bays. On this floor the window is round-arched and has moulded strings at impost level. Above this are 2 elaborate consoles taking moulded stone hood, flat but breakingupwards in a segmental curve. Windowsof 1st and 2nd bays have unusual shouldered architraves and 3 plain horizontal bands. Remaining 3 bays have windows with shouldered architraves and broken triangular pediments. 2nd floor. 3 plain horizontal bands run across whole front. All windows havemoulded sills, moulded architraves and keystones. 2nd window from left hand is tripartite with completely plain stone mullions. Attic. Dormer above 2nd bay from left hand has flat moulded stone cornice and 3 sashes separated by plain stone mullions. 3 wooden dormers above 3 right hand bays have sashes and alternate triangular and segmental pediments. Nos 49, 50 and 5OA form a group.
