STOKE CLIMSLAND - SX 37 NE 6/107 Higher Pempwell - - II

Shown on OS map as Pempwell. Farmhouse, now house. Early to mid-cl7, extended C18 with later additions and alterations. Roughly coursed slate-stone with granite quoins, roughcast to front; slate roofs with ceramic cresting to main range. Earliest part is left section of main range, extended or rebuilt to right of ridge stack in C18 (straight joint to rear) with projecting range at right-angles to left also an addition, forming present L-plan. 2 storeys. Main range has 3 late C20 casements directly below eaves and to ground-floor centre and left; C20 door to right. Ridge stack with rendered base and red brick shaft between centre and right window and similar external end stack to right. Prominent stepped external lateral stack to left end on road side. Projecting range (formerly a Smithy) has similar stack to those of main range at junction with latter and wide infilled opening on road side. Single-storey and 2-storey lean-tos to rear of main range. Interior: Most notable features are 3 chamfered cross beams with straight-cut stops and moulded joists with stepped stops to left ground-floor room. This also has an open fireplace with large chamfered granite lintel and cloam oven to left. Remains of forge to corner of projecting range. This was re-roofed c1920 but lines of 2 earlier roofs are visible. Roof of main range rebuilt Cl9.
