GV II

Portal of railway tunnel. 1846-8. For the Liverpool and Bury Railway Company. Engineers James and William Thomson. Sandstone ashlar. Horseshoe arch with deep splayed reveal and roll-moulded surround; retaining wall of rock-faced masonry, and short parapet of large dressed blocks. Forms group with railway bridge approximately 250 metres east (qv).
