Farmhouse. Late C17 with later additions and alterations, C20 dormers. Rubble,
rendered to front and right return, stone dressings, double Roman tiled roof with
raised coped verges and gable stacks. Symmetrical, front L-plan. 2½ storeys,
5 windows, ground floor has 4 cross windows with wide ovolo mullions and transoms,
4 panes to lower lights, 2 to upper, central C20 plank door with overlight in
moulded stone surround; all first floor windows of 2 lights, 4 panes each with
wide ovolo mullions and moulded surrounds, 3 gabled dormers, single storey lean-to
to left with C20 window, render partly removed. Right return has 2 windows, all
cross windows as on front at ground and first floor, 2 smaller 2-light windows at
attic level with same mullions and surround; left return has 2-light window at
first floor as on front with C20 glazing, 2 attic windows as at right return.
Rear of main house has gable end to left, 2-light window at first floor as on
front with leaded lights remaining to right, single storey lean-to with C20 door,
inner door in chamfered stone surround. Rear wing of 2 storeys and 2 windows,
varied at left return including 3 dormers, to right return has 3 windows, first
floor has two 2-light and central 3-light window as on front but with C20 glazing,
blocked single light in 2nd bay from right; ground floor has two 2-light C19
casements and one single light casement, door in 2nd bay from right in plain stone
surround. Interior: through passage; front left room has large fireplace with
heavy timber lintel, recess to right, deep chamfered beam, windows chamfered at
inside, front right room divided, has shell cornice and round-headed recess to
each side of C20 fireplace. Winder stair at rear of passage, attic altered as
living accommodation, C19 5-bay roof only partially visible, one row of purlins,
principal rafters and collar, brace below principal rafters. Torney's Court
Farmhouse was one of 3 manors in the parish of Cold Ashton.
