DURSLEY LONG STREET ST 7598 (south side) 5/36 No 20 (previously listed as No 24) 50.6.61 GV II
Former town house in row, now shop with flat over. Late C16 or early C17; c1830 remodelling; mid C19 alterations; C20 shop front. Rendered exterior; timber framed structure; limestone dressings; brick chimneys; Welsh and stone slate roofs. Three- storey; throughway to yard at rear. Front: 4-window sash fenestration to upper floors, 12-pane to middle, 6-pane to upper floor. Moulded timber parapet cornice. C20 shop window to ground floor with moulded 4-centred archway to left having flat moulded hood. Rear: 2-gables with boldly shaped bargeboards, right gable being jettied at angle to rear wall. Tall round-arched staircase sash window above 2-light flat mullioned casement; oval-headed archway to right. No 22 Long Street is attached to left half of rear elevation (q.v.). Interior not inspected, but simple staircase with stick balusters visible through sash window appears contemporary with front elevation. Structure is timber framed in part, much said to be visible on upper floors. Late C19 photographs show a single-storey canted ground floor bay window to front elevation, with second 4-centred archway to right. (A. Best et al, An Historical Survey of Dursley, 1985)
