2. Circa 1734. Nos 24 and 26 were developed in similar style by John Carey; and became part of the Bear Inn. Three storeys. Four windows. Double-pile plan with hipped and gabled tile roofs at the rear. Tall brick stacks with moulded caps. Multi-coloured stock brick. Brick dentil cornice and parapet. Moulded string at 2nd floor level breaking forward over 1st floor windows. Gauged flat red brick arches to flush framed sash windows with exposed boxing and glazing bars. Late C19 shopfront. First floor front room with some reused C17 panelling. Sfter the closure of the Bear Inn (before 1768), No 24 became part of Gale's Speenhamland Brewery and from 1802-circa 1930 part of the Brewer's House of Adnam's Brewery. In the late C19 the ground floor was used as the Bear Public House. (Newbury Buildings Past and Present (1973) 5 and 7).
