GV II
Canal aqueduct carrying Leeds-Liverpool Canal over culverted public road. c.1771-4. Resident engineer James Brindley, succeeded c.1771-2 by John Longbotham. For Leeds and Liverpool Canal Company. Large squared sandstone blocks with some coursed sandstone rubble. A low semi-circular arched culvert with plain voussoirs to the portal at each end, a plain band over the arch, a plain cornice and parapet of coursed rubble. Part of one of the earliest and most ambitious trunk canals in the country. Forms group with Giant's Hall approx. 30m north (q.v.).
