House. C16 or earlier, thatched, facing W. On Clintons Estate
map of 1588 (HRO). Originally an open hall and one and a half
storey N end roofed in line: central chimney and floor inserted
and house converted to lobby entry plan, in early C17, with new
stair formerly in lobby and 4-light diamond mullioned slope
roofed dormer to front (head mortices remain): renovated and 2
storeys rear wing added 1954 and extended to rear (E) 1969, one
and a half storeys, timberframed, and plastered with black
painted plinth. Steep pitched thatched roof gabled to N but
hipped at S over end lean-to with lower eaves, 3-light wood
casements. External gable chimney in C18 red brick on N. 2 3-
light casement dormers on front eaves. Close studded timber
frame exposed inside. Swept jowled posts, tension brace in
partition, chamfered axial beam and joints in N part with old
stair formerly in NE corner. Chamfered and stopped axial beam
supporting square joists of floor inserted over hall. Clasped
purlin roof with rafters possibly soot blackened. Quality of
carpentry suggests this was a 3-unit C16 house, the service end
being demolished when the S lean-to was substituted in the early
C18. Old dormer over the hall being of unusual interest.
