SU 82 SW TROTTON WITH CHITHURST CHITHURST LANE 10/9 Malt House - II The entry shall be amended to read: House. Late C16 or early C17 possibly originally an iron masters house refaced in early C19 when it was converted to cottages with C20 wings added to north west and north east and other C20 alterations. Exterior built of coursed stone rubble with red brick window dressings. Renewed tiled roof with central panelled brick chimney stack and external brick stack to south west. 2 storeys and attics; 2 hipped dormers. 6 windows to 1st floor and 5 windows to ground floor. Casements with leaded lights and cambered architraves to ground floor. Patch of C17 brickwork under chimney. Dutch door to right hand side. North east elevation is C20 and tile hung. Large C20 extension to north west is sandstone with brick dressings and wooden casement windows, not of special interest. Lounge has large open brick fireplace with moulded wooden bressummer and cambered opening to beehive- shaped bread oven. To the right is a wooden spice cupboard with incised lozenge decoration and cocks head hinges. The other side has an early C17 style 4 centred arched stone fireplace which has probably been brought in and a bread oven to the right dating from the period when the house was subdivided into cottages. The Dining Room (formerly Parlour) has a late C16 or early C17 4 centred arched brick fireplace with stone quoins and chamfered spine beam with lambs tongue stops and chamfered floor joists. North east wall has original wooden door frame chamfered with high stop. 1st floor former principal bedroom over original Parlour has a late C16 to early C17 4 centred arched brick fireplace with straight chamfer and high stop. Queen post roof and exposed framing with midrail. C19 plank doors. Some of the framing is staggered with C20 non-structural curved braces for decoration. Elsewhere in the house are sections of imported twisted balusters and early C17 carved panels which may be from a carved overmantel.
