WARE TOWN
BLUECOAT YARD
(West side)
No.1
GV
II*
House. C16, remodelled late C17. Timber-framed, plastered,
pebbledashed and colourwashed. Old tiled roof with gabled
casement dormer, above coved plaster eaves cornice.
2 storeys and attics. 3 light flush casement windows ground
and first floors, flush panelled door in architrave surround
with weatherboard head at left. Shares its structure with the
north (right hand) bay of The Old Stables (qv). The basic
structure pre-dates the acquisition of the Bluecoat Yard
buildings by Christ's Hospital in 1685, but the remodelling
dates from late C17, probably to serve as `nurse cottages' for
the pupils of the school, with No.2 and the newly built Nos
3-12 (qv).
