House. Early C18, altered 1899 and extensively remodelled 1966-8 by Raymond Erith for Lord and Lady Monk Bretton. Square building of 2 storeys, attic and basement above ground level. Red brick and grey headers. Wooden modillion eaves cornice. Hipped tiled roof.
The original portion faces north and dates from the late C17. Five windows
(one blocked). In the centre is a small pediment containing a bull's-eye window
with 4 red brick keystones. Casement windows with small square leaded panes,
including narrow windows flanking the doorway and the central window above.
Doorway in moulded stone architrave surround with broken curved pediment over
rectangular fanlight and door of 6 fielded panels, at the head of 10 steps,
with iron handrail.
The east front has 2 windows and 2 dormers and another doorway at the head
of 8 steps, with pilasters, flat hood with cove beneath it and door of 6 fielded
panels. Stone cartouche of the Shelley family over the doorway with coronet
and eagle's head. Chimney breast to the south of the doorway.
The west front has 3 windows and 2 modillion dormers.
The south front has been added in the early C18 or in the style of that date.
Five windows. Three hipped dormers. The centre window bay is recessed with
its ground floor partly filled in at a later date, with a shaped gable containing a coronet and the initials MB (Lord Monk Bretton created 1884). Each of the flanking projections has a hipped roof. Sash windows with wide glazing bars.
INTERIOR. Staircase, panelling and fireplaces of 1700 circa. Top lit staircase inserted by Raymond Erith, who also re-arranged interior and re-modelled the attic floor.
