TQ 2880 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER UPPER GROSVENOR 68/54 STREET, Wl 24.2.58 No. 44 G.V. II One of a pair of terraced town houses with No. 45. 1727-30 probably by Charles Griffith, carpenter, with C.19 heightening. Brown brick, slate roof. 5 storeys and basement. 3 windows wide. Entrance to right (balancing that of No. 45) with good wooden original doorcase of fluted engaged Ionic columns and modillion bracketed pediment, 6-panel door and lunette fanlight. Recessed cambered head glazing bar sashes with French windows on 1st floor. Stuccoed plat band over ground floor and brick band over 2nd floor continuous with No. 45, parapet with coping. Wrought iron area railings. Rear elevation has full height 3 window bow of c.1791. Of early C.18 interior features the hall and staircase have been little altered with panelling intact to the hall and fluted pilaster archway to the stair compartment up to the 1st floor only and top lit; carved cut string and 3 corkscrew balusters per tread, the top light is set in a decorated plaster dome on a deep drum; good architraved door off compartment to rear ground floor etc, the main rooms, bathroom and washrooms redecorated by M. Boudin of Jansen et Cie, Paris, c.1934 including circular and oval bedrooms with coral and shell wall lights etc. Survey of London; Vol. XL.
