GV II
Country house. 1903. 1906 and 1909 by E Guy Dawber for Sir John Scott. Uncoursed rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, Cotswold stone roofs with coped verges; gables have cut finials. Irregular plan, free Jacobean style with irregular gables and planes to south east. 2½ storeys. Entrance front roughly 10 bays, mullion windows, transoms on ground floor, string on part of ground floor, drips over other ground floor windows. The projecting left hand block of 1909 has a 1st floor oriel. Angle bay link between left hand and centre blocks. Central block has ashlar fronted porch with Doric arch, ashlar entry on ground floor, panelled door in C17 manner and rusticated Doric to 1st floor with jewel frieze and open balustrade. 3 storey crenellated tower links to right hand block at whose furtherest extremity is a pair of large ball-capped gatepiers. The SW front forms a balanced composition with two gables over 2-storey angled bays with shapwork parapets and mullion and transom windows, slight central break with 3 diagonally-set chimney and on ground floor a large niche with open pediment and stathe; bullseye lights in gables. Smaller gables to rear; small courtyard with tile-hung and angled stair-turret in corner. Interior: Early C17 style staircase; drawing room with Louis XVI decoration including painted over-door panels; large room on ground floor of 1909 block with rich cornice plasterwork by Marcel Boulenger.
