History

A medieval village cross, restored as a war memorial to the fallen of the First World War, c.1920.

Details

A C15 village cross, restored as a war memorial following the First World War, altered with an inscription following the Second World War.

MATERIALS AND PLAN: The cross and memorial are constructed from stone and are square in plan.

DESCRIPTION: The memorial consists of a Celtic-style cross with carved faces, atop a tapering plinth which connects with the socket of the original village cross. On the eastern face of the socket is carved the inscription, "THIS ANCIENT/ CROSS WAS RESTORED IN/ MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918/ WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED/ ON THE TABLET IN THE CHURCH".

The north face of the cross has the carved inscription, "SECOND GREAT WAR/ 1939 - 45".

The cross stands on a stone plinth.
