Details

TINTAGEL SW 08 NE Trecarne Old Farmhouse including 4/170 outbuilding joining on right hand hipped end of front range II Farmhouse and outbuilding. Possibly C17 extended in C19. Slate stone rubble. Slate roof with hipped ends and brick end stacks to C19 range on front and hipped end to outbuilding which joins the right hand side wall. To the rear, the earlier C17 range has a lower rag slate roof with gable ends and brick end stacks. There is a rare possibly C17 clay ridge tile to the rear right with the headless figure of a horse. To the rear, the service wing has a gable end and projecting stone rubble end stack with cloam oven projection. The original house was possibly of 2 room and cross or through passage plan, heated by 2 end stacks. In circa mid C17 a service wing was added to the rear of the passage, heated by a gable end stack with cloam oven and possibly a smoking chamber. In circa early C19 a dairy was added on the north side in the angle between the left hand room and rear service wing. In circa mid C19 the house was considerably extended across the front elevation with a single depth range containing 2 reception rooms heated by end stacks and a central entrance with wide cross passage containing stair. In circa mid to late C19 a 2-storey extension of 1 room plan was added on the right hand gable end of the earlier range and possibly contemporary with this a 2- storey outbuilding was added on the right hand hipped end of the mid C19 front range. 2 storeys. Almost symmetrical 3 window front elevation with C20 PVC windows inserted in earlier sash openings and C20 glazed porch in centre. The outbuilding to the right has a stone rubble ramp providing access to the first floor. The rear elevation remains unaltered with a separate entrance to the rear wing. To the rear left a C20 PVC window on the ground floor and a C19 sash on first. The right hand gable end has a late C19 or early C20 canted bay window on the ground floor and PVC windows on the first. The rear wing has a C19 3-light casement window. Interior : C19 front range with stair intact and chimneypiece partly replaced. The rear C17 range has been remodelled on the ground floor and the partition removed to form a large kitchen. The rear wing has a large fireplace with cloam oven and possible smoking chamber which has now been blocked. On the first floor is one C18 2-panel door and an C18 chimneypiece. The roof structure is largely C18 and later with the principals slightly curved and chamfered, jointed and pegged at the apices. The collars have been largely renewed. The clay ridge tile on the C17 range is a rare survival in the south west.
