4/216 St Piran's Well

GV II
Holy wellhouse and hand pump. The wellhouse has possibly medieval origins although
it was partly rebuilt in the late C19 or early C20. Slate stone rubble walls and
pyramidal roof. Granite cap surmounted by an iron cross.
Roughly square-on-plan, built into the side of a slope probably over a field spring.
The low opening in the front elevation has been altered with a slate lintel, outer
segmental arch and has an iron gate. The spring water is piped and runs into a
rectangular basin within the wellhouse. The water then runs into the stream below.
Circa C19 iron hand pump on higher (south) side of wellhouse on rear.
The dedication of the well is uncertain although it stands close to the converted
mission church of St Piran (qv).
