Large corner block of shops and flats. C1904 by Beresford Pite, built as Youth Hostel. Banded red brick with restrained use of Portland stone dressings, slate roof, in Beresford Pite's individual Arts and Crafts manner. 4 storeys, basement and 2 tiers of dormers in gable end roofs. Long 9-bay range to Great Titchfield Street and 3 bay returns. Central pedimented doorway to Mortimer Street flanked by shop windows. Strong vertical emphasis to composition of facades with narrow through-storey oriels and attenuated through-storey shallow arcades framing cambered arched sash windows. Parapet with coping carried up gable ends and vertical emphasis continued through dormers to lofty panelled chimney stacks. Plain area railings. L.C.C. plaque on No. 44 records residence and death of Joseph Nollekens in a house on this site.
