LAYER DE LA HAYE CHURCH ROAD 1. 5214 Church of St John The Baptist TL 91 NW 17/6 7.4.65 I 2. C14 nave, to C12 chancel. C19 east window in C14 two centred arch. Two blocked windows in south wall of chancel. One C12 window remains complete in chancel. Chancel arch is C15, two centred and of 2 hollow chamfered orders. South-east quoins of nave have Roman brick. In north wall are 3 windows, 2 of which are C14 with 2 trefoiled ogee lights, with quatrefoil in 2 centred head, with moulded label. North doorway and south arcade are C19. C14, west tower, in 3 stages, with embattled parapet. Two centred tower arch. South wall has doorway to stair turret, with chamfered jambs and 2 centred arch. West window is 2 cinquefoiled lights with quatrefoil in 2 centred head, with moulded label. North and west Windows of second stage have one trefoiled light in a square head with moulded label. Bell chamber has 4 similar windows, but of 2 lights. C14 north porch, extensively altered in late C19. Moulded top plates, chamfered and cambered tie beams, and arch braces. Remains of original carved bargeboards. Nave roof is 7 cants with scissor braces.
