YORK AVENUE 1. 5270 East Cowes No 182 (Albert Cottage and covered way to south SZ 59 NW 5/116 25.1.72. II GV 2. Circa 1868. Italianate classical large villa related to Osborne style and possibly by Cubitt. Formerly part of the Osborne Estate, named after one of Queen Victoria's sons and residence of some of her daughters and ladies in waiting. Two storeys cement rendered with slate roof, Irregular plan. Rusticated quoins to ground floor on angles, dentil cornice and frieze to ground floor. Low pitched hipped slate roofs having carved modillion rockets to flat eaves and garlands and marques in frieze between them. On the east entrance front the main block is of 8 windows, 2 in a projection at the south end, recessed sashes in architrave surrounds. Projecting porch, closed to south side but open to north, rusticated pilasters flanking moulded round arches with console keystones. Doric entablature, balustraded parapet. The adjoining north block is set well back with a recessed brick section of 3 windows in moulded architrave surrounds, egg and dart and leaf mouldings. The chimney stacks are tall, Italianate, with bracketed cornice caps. The west garden front is also asymmetrical with an off centre 3 bay projection. Outer windows in architrave surrounds with rendered balconettes on shaped brackets with interlaced circle balstrades. The central 1st floor window is set back in a recess giving on to the roof of a large central canted ground floor bay window. French casement to centre, divided by tall pilasters with egg and dart moulding to caps. The northern part of this garden front set back, has 2 architrave framed sashes on 1st floor and on ground floor a large 3-light window in slight rectangular projection, pilasters dividing, paired to corners, parallel parapet with interlaced circles. The southern part is also set back with 2 slight projections, only one window between them on the ground floor, 4 windows on the 1st floor in architrave surrounds with balconettes on shaped brackets with interlaced circle balustrades. To the south, extending along each side of the garden, is a covered passageway built as a link with Osborne Cottage (qv) when occupied by Princess Beatrice. The section now belonging to Albert Cottage has rendered brick walls, plinth, cornice and blocking course divided by piers. Alternate bays have 3 light lozenge glazed casements lighting passage.
