Details
SU 9721 PETWORTH CHURCH STREET (north side) 29/247 The Parish Church of St Mary 22.2.55 I
Large church comprising a chancel with north chapel and south vestry, north transept and tower in place of south transept and nave with aisles. The chancel is C13, the remainder mostly C14, restored by Sir Charles Barry in 1827 and again in 1902. The top of the tower was added by Barry in 1827 and then stuccoed with a spire above. The spire and stucco were removed and the red brick of the tower exposed in 1953, Architects Seely & Paget. The interior has a west gallery and a gallery in the north transept which was the private pew of the owners of Petworth House. Statue at the west end of the north aisle of the third Lord Egremont by E H Bailey, R.A.
