4-0/910/10002 Nos 1 and 2 Woodbine Cottages

GV II

Pair of cottages linked by gateway. Early C19 (probably c1820): restored late 1992. Course limestone with dressed quoins and lintels and ashlar gateway: hipped Welsh slate roofs with stone lateral stacks. Each cottage squar on plan, originally with small service room and living room to ground floor. Each of 2 storeys, with 2-window fronts having lintels over one and 2-light casements with glazing bars and over central doorway now with window Fine cenral gateway with string course linking flat arch to flanking pilasters surmounted by ball finials. Flanking lean-tos rebuilt in extended across rear in 1992. Entrances now in inner return walls. Interiors said to have retained some original joinery. An interesting design for paired cottages in a formal estate manner, here bounding the rear of the former stable yard etc to the rear of Ivy House (qv) in High Street, and recently restored to a very high standard.
