Details

COWES OLD ROAD, EAST COWES SZ 59 NW 5/142 North Lodge II Former lodge, now house. Designed and built by John Nash between 1798 and 1802 as a lodge to East Cowes Castle, his own house. Built of Isle of Wight limestone, coursed rubble with tiled roof with alternately 4 courses of plain tiles to 1 of curved; clay ridge tiles and double brick clustered chimneystacks. 2 storeys 2 windows. Casement windows with leaded lights, retaining original frames and latches and hinges of brass and copper. Right side dormer with fretted bargeboards. Ground floor windows are square bays supports on wooden bracket and have a tiled penticed hood above, almost the full width of the building with coved overhang. Projecting central weather porch with arched opening and fretted gable. C20 extension in matching materials to rear. Interior retains an original late C18 cast iron hob grate. East Cowes Castle was demolished in the 1960s and North lodge is now the only surviving building from the estate.
