STATION ROAD SX 9688 (off South Side) 8/1162 TOPSHAM Railway Station II
Former station building, now house and offices. Dated 1860, by Tite for the Exeter-Exmouth line, LSWR. Painted brickwork, asbestos cement slate to main building, slate to lower wing. Compact gabled main building with very large chimney stacks; lower wing (south end) now in separate ownership, to gabled outer end. Front to railway: the low block has high coped gable at left end, with small vent in gable top, then long front has 1:2:1-light canted bay, a 4-pane sash, a broad 4-centred opening now glazed, and a 2-light mullioned casement. Right of this the coped gable of the principal 2-storey building with a recessed plain shield in gable above a 2-light at first floor and 3-light at ground floor. Low block has 2 lofty brick stacks, and main one two broad eaves stacks to right. Beyond gable a stepped down wall with blocked opening. Road front has narrow gable wing, left, with large 2- light and 3 single lights on left return; at main front a 2 and 3-light casement to first floor, an obstructed 3-light in the slightly set back wing and a small 2-light square bay with hipped roof. Door, to left, is in timber framed gabled porch, and has 4-centre head. Low wing to right has three 2-light and a 4-centred opening with pair of doors with light over. Windows generally have flush set chamfered mullions. A neat little design, the building lies close (c 35 metres) to the surviving signal box (qv).
