Details

TQ 2881 CITY OF WESTMINSTER NEW CAVENDISH STREET, W1 45/54 (north side) No 73 G.V. II Town villa. Later C.19 rebuild of Portland Place mews building. Stucco, slate fish scale slates to front pitch roof. Interesting case of "Regency" Revival. 2 storeys, basement and dormered mansard. 5 windows wide with central entrance bay slightly advanced. Chanelled stucco ground floor has semicircular arched doorway in centre break, framed by pilasters carrying entablature with modillioned cornice; panelled door moulded doorhead and reveal enriched with rope moulding and keystone. Recessed sashes (one blind on ground floor), those on 1st floor in eared architraves. Rusticated quoins, enriched cornice over ground floor and crowning entablature with modillion cornice and a blocking course which is slightly inflected over centre break. The dormers have shouldered bases and segmental arched cornice-hoods. Early instance of the Portland Estate reintroducing a modest domestic residential scale in this area, a scheme pursed on these east-west cross streets in the early 1900s.
