3/161 Lane House and attached barn.
27.9.65 II
House and attached barn. House has single-cell of early C17 with early C19 addition to right. Barn to left initialled and dated " IW Thin coursed rubble, dressed quoins, watershot masonry to C19 1672". addition, rubble to rear, stone slate roofs under 3 different roof lines. 2 storeys. Forms a long range. House has one bay of 3-light double-chamfered mullioned windows with almost square reveals. That to ground floor altered to 2-lights. Inserted doorway with monolithic jambs. C19 addition taller and has 2 bays of 16-paned sashed windows with plain stone surrounds with projecting sills. Set between, doorway with monolithic jambs. Stone gutter brackets. Stack to ridge of C17 cell at junction with barn. 2 stacks to ridge of C19 house. Rear has main feature of stair-window with semicircular-arched head with impost blocks and keystone. Quoins at division with earlier house which has single-chamfered light (to light stair) to left of 2-light chamfered mullioned window. Barn: 5 bays. Single-aisle which breaks forward and has cart-entry set within a portal of the aisle. This has large, curved, stop-chamfered wooden-lintel that may be a re-used cruck. Set within the right re-entrant angle a doorway with composite jambs and broad stop-chamfered surround, bears initials "I B" (Brown family) and "1784". Another similar doorway to right-hand end of aisle bears C17 date. Coped gable with kneelers to left gable. Rear, flush with house, has opposing cart-entry with composite jambs, monolithic lintel and chamfered surround (reduced in size).
Interior: Barn with principal truss with collar. House: on the east wall of the C17 cell is a painting dated 1689. The painting has a panel framed with columns and an arcaded frieze. The panel reads:
"Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and evil speaking be put away from you with all malice and be ye kinde one to another tender hearted forgiving one another even as GOD for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
To the right-hand side, the date 1689 is painted twice, together with an impression of the pelican in its piety. Above the panel, raised plaster letters read "I.W.M.W". The room also contains a fine newel spiral stone stair and elaborate stop-chamfered spine beams and floor joists. May have been a Non-conformist meeting house after the Act of Toleration, 1689 the date of the painting.
