Details
MARBURY CUM QUOISLEY C.P. COMBERMERE PARK SJ 54 SE 5756 4475 6/52 Monumental Obelisk - - II Monumental obelisk to Field Marshal Viscount Combermere, 1890. Keuper and bunter sandstones. Deep square plinth with banded rustication supporting two chamfered steps leading to the base of the monument which has clasping buttresses to the corners and a cyma-moulded cornice above. There is a further chamfered step supporting the colossal obelisk which has, approximately half way up each side, aedicular window surrounds with rudimentary classical detailing set upon a cyma-moulded string course. To the centre of the base on each side is a panel of red bunter sandstone. To the south this contains a doorway, and at the north it bears a memorial inscription which has the coat of arms of the Cottons at left and at right the words IN MEMORY OF FIELD MARSHAL VISCOUNT COMBERMERE G:G:B. K:S:I. K:T:S. G:G:H. P:G BORN 1773 DIED 1865. ERECTED IN 1890 BY THE DIRECTION OF HIS WIDOW MARY VISCOUNTESS COMBERMERE WHO DIED 1889 The monument is similar to that designed by Sir Robert Smirke for Combermere's erstwhile commanding officer, the Duke of Wellington, and erected in Phoenix Park, Dublin in 1817-22.
