9/164 Spring Cottage and Meridian

GV II

Pair of attached houses. Circa 1750 with C19 and C20 alterations. Spring Cottage is
rendered and lined out, Meridian in painted rubble, asbestos slate roofs with brick
gable end stacks.
Plan: pair of attached houses of double depth plan, each with one room to front and
rear and adjoining central entrances. Each of 3 storeys and 2 windows. Spring
Cottage to left has at ground floor a 20-pane sash with Gothic margin glazing and
external shutters; this is one of the few remaining examples of the Kingsand/Cawsand
type window, as at Dorset House, Heavitree Road and No. 4 Fore Street (q.v.). To
right, a 4-panelled and glazed recessed door. Two 16-pane sashes at first floor and
2 small 20-pane sashes under eaves.
Meridian has 4-panelled and glazed recessed door, 16-pane sash with pintles remaining
for external sashes; first floor has narrow 3-pane light and C20 window, 2nd floor
has single light and 12-pane sash.
