3/40 Manor House Barn
GV II
Barn. Mid C16 timber-frame encased in stone, possibly early C18 with later
C19 brick insertion up to 1st-floor level. Random rubble, orange/red brick
(rendered). Welsh blue-slate roof but thought to have been thatched originally.
4-bay aisled barn with continuous aisle to south (rear) and aisle to 1st bay to
north. North front: tall cart-entry set back with wooden lintel, 2 exposed posts
and wall-plates of central truss (see interior). To right, brick above a stone
foundation perhaps indicates it was partially timber-framed originally.
Interior: 4-bays of post-and-truss construction, posts with jowelled heads on
padstones with large curved braces to arcade-plate and tie-beam. All timbers
of large scantling. Single rafters from ridge to arcade-plate and wall-plate
on north side, rest on single purl in supported by almost vertical clasping
angle-struts from tie-beam. All rafters have halvings for collars (gone)
indicating a collar-rafter roof originally. An unusual feature is the presence
of an extra central truss back-to-back each supporting a separate wall - and
arcade-plate. That this is an original feature is indicated by the lack of a
mortice hole on the inner face for a brace to the plates.
