SD 92NE BLACKSHAW C.P. NEW ROAD, SD 953286 Colden 7/33 Field Head -

- II*

House, late C17 refronted and raised mid C18 with later C18 addition to the rear and with added barn early C19 reusing late C17 cart entries. Hammer dressed stone, ashlar to south front, stone slate roof. 2 storeys. South front has plinth, moulded band, rusticated quoins, and eaves cornice with moulded brackets. 7-bay facade. Windows have architrave and moulded sill. Set in 3rd bay is doorway with architrave flanked by fluted pilasters, pulvinated frieze and triangular pediment. Over is window with lugged architrave, dropped keystone and cornice. Set between 1st and 2nd bay is double chamfered 2-light mullioned window at basement level lighting cellar. Gables have moulded copings which continue under the stack. One other stack to ridge. Left hand return wall has roof line of earlier C17 house. Attached to rear at right angles is lean-to with 2-light and 3-light double chamfered mullioned windows and 2-over- 3-light stepped window to 1st floor. This is attached to late C17 single cell which has 5-light double chamfered mullioned window with king mullion (3 + 2) and 6-light window over to 1st floor. Quoins mark later addition with 4-light chamfered mullioned window to 1st floor. Large gable stack and one other. Attached barn parallel to main range has segmental-arched cart entries with large skewbacks and chamfered-surround with 2 and 3-light flat faced mullioned windows to bay closest to house. Reroofed C19 with softwood fish-bone king-post roof. Interior: South-west front room has stone fireplace with architrave and broken pediment, dado panelling, 6-panelled door. Central room has fireplace with architrave and modillion cornice, and doorway (now forming cupboard) with double doors and 6 fielded panels with arched heads set within moulded frame. Rear room has C17 reeded ceiling beams and fireplace with segmental-arched lintel with cyma moulded surround and moulded shelf. Chamber over this room has similar smaller fireplace and window with panelled window surround and seat. A house unique within the township in having a 'polite' Georgian facade yet not symmetrical, the disposition of its rooms being dictated by the earlier C17 house which it replaced with one room to the west of a through-passage with 2 rooms to the east. There was a significant change of ownership in 1765 and it is possible the house dates from this period.
