TQ 2780 NE and 2880 NWE CITY OF WESTMINSTER PARK LANE, Wl 67/6 ;68/11 (east side) 5.2.70 Nos.139 to 141 (consec) G.V. II Block of flats. 1913-19 by Frank Verity. Portland stone ashlar, with rusticated ground floor, on steel frame, slate roof. Prominent corner site with Oxford Street at Marble Arch in Verity's sophisticated Parisian Beaux Arts Louis XVI manner. 7 storeys (including mezzanine) and dormered mansard. 11 windows wide to Park Lane, the 2 bays each end slightly advanced, single bay inset quadrant corners and 3 window returns to Oxford Street and North Row. The channelled ground floor has central Doric columned portal. The ground floor windows, 3 light casements, are deeply recessed under segmental voussoired arches. The mezzanine windows set on sill course are flanked by large elongated console brackets supporting 1st floor iron balcony with stone dies. The 1st 2nd and 3rd floor windows are vertically linked in same reveal with cornice lintels over 3rd floor. The 4th floor windows repeat the mezzanine theme with similar consoles carrying cornice-balcony. Deep projecting cornice over attic storey surmounted by cast iron balustrade. The advanced end bays have stone-faced corniced and blocked upper attic as do returns. Survey of London; Vol. XL.
