Details
BRADFORD ROAD 1 5113 (West side) SE 1417 and SE 1517 Fartown 28/800 No 83 Hebble House including II boundary walls in front of GV house, gate piers and gate
2 House and attached front wall. Mid-late C19. Ashlar, Welsh slate roof. 2 storeys with attic and cellar; 2 bays, right bay projecting slightly and gabled. Chamfered plinth. On left, steps up to round-arched doorway which has: 4-panel door; etched glass fanlight; architrave with pilasters on plinths and bunched flowers and foliage as keystone; floral-decorated corbels carrying colonnettes with similarly-decorated capitals and supporting cornice; below steps up to entrance, a board door (? to privy). Windows are round-arched with sashes. Right hand bay has paired sashes to ground and 1st floors, on ground floor having hollow-moulded surround with foliage decoration: very fine elaborate, relief-carved, foliage and swan-like bird as keystone; to front, low decorative, open-work iron rail on projecting sill supported on corbels with lions' heads which flank a panel with more relief carving of an owl and foxes; short corbelled, colonnettes, as at doorway, support cornice below lst- floor window. This has: no central jamb; hoodmould with foliage-decorated stops and keystone; to front, iron railing with maple-leaf-like finials. Single 4-pane sash to left bay over door, similarly treated and with similar balcony. Narrow sash with similar hoodmould to gable of right bay which has copying on moulded kneelers and finial. Eaves cornice. Shouldered cross-ridge stack to centre, rendered. Low front wall linked to house by side walls and another, flanking accessway to basement door, which ramp down from house. Walls are of coursed squared stone with chamfered ashlar coping, the link walls with simple posts carrying iron rail. In front wall, end gateways, Left one retaining hooped and arrow-finialed iron gate, each gateway having short, square-sectioned, chamfered ashlar piers, with ogee-moulded and broached tots supporting domical finials, the right-hand piers engraved "HEBBLE" "HOUSE". The quality of decorative stonework on this building is high, and is unusual on a house of this type.
