Details

LONGWOOD GATE 1 5113 (North East side, off) SE 1016 + SE 1116 32/1450 Row of five Tenter Posts approximately 60 metres to East North East of the Ship II Inn

2. Row of five tenter posts. Probably C19. Monolithic posts, rectangular on plan, each with socket for iron hook. One post has lost its hook; all but one have broken tops. As part of the cloth-manufacturing process, lengths of cloth would have been stretched out to dry between these tenter posts and others, now removed. It is unusual to find any such surviving posts, although the existence of many tenter fields is known.
