Details
SHUSTOKE SHAWBURY LANE SP28NW (East side) 5/193 Hill Farmhouse - II House. Late C17, altered in early C19. Timber-framed, partly exposed in one gable end, otherwise cased and rebuilt in red brick, Flemish bond on squared and coursed sandstone plinth. Plain-tiled gable roofs. Ridge stack of red brick at junction of main range and cross-wing. T-plan having principal entry to main range, away from the hearth. One storey and attic. South front was the main elevation. One C19 gable dormer. Boarded doors. Iron frame leaded light casements with original fastenings, C19. In the north wall, overlooking the yard, is another C19 gable dormer and at ground floor an early C19 canted bay with brick base and similar iron casements, leaded lights and original fastenings. The cross-wing at the east end is of 2 storeys. Box framing of small panels exposed in north gable. 2 bays. At first floor a C19 casement. Segmental arch to 3-light ground floor casement. Some disturbed brickwork at north end. Interior: Back-to-back inglenook hearths, one with C18/early C19 mantel. Later C17 closed string dog-leg staircase with landing. Turned balusters, and toads-back rail. Stop-chamfered main beam. Through-purlin roofs to both main range and cross-wing. The gable ends and main trusses have studwork. At the gable ends in the heads there are inclined struts. The centre truss has a raised tie to allow easier movement at first floor. There is a Victorian cast-iron grate in one bedroom. In the cross-wing at first floor a cheese room has a floor of plaster.
