Gatepiers, gates, quadrant walls and railings. c1755 probably by John Carr
for Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood. Ashlar, cast- and wrought-iron.
Pair of main gatepiers and a pair of subsidiary gatepiers to which are attached
curving quadrant walls which terminate in small piers. Main gatepiers: channelled
rustication, Doric entablature, cyma-moulded cornice, frieze with paterae,
triangular casement-moulded pediment, the cornice continued round the sides.
Lower flanking piers: similarly treated with channelled rustication, Doric
entablature and triangular pediments. Gates and railings have simple stick bars
terminating in obelisk finials. Hinge has standard and gun-barrel turned rod
surmounted by urn finial. Flanking quadrant walls: low with moulded ashlar coping
surmounted by railings with bars with every 15th bar a standard. Terminates in
square low piers with projecting square cornices and slightly domed caps.
Gave the main access in the C18 to Harewood House (q.v.).
