School and master's house. c1768 by John Carr for Edwin Lascelles 1st Lord
Harewood with mid-C19 and early-C20 extensions. Hammer-dressed stone, stone
slate roof. Symmetrical facade (master's house on left): 2-storey 1-bay
pavilion blocks flanking 3-bay single-storey school-room. Quoins. Plinth
and 1st-floor band on outer bays continues as eaves band across school-room.
Outer bays, breaking forward: windows have plain-stone surrounds, ground floor
originally with cross windows, right window now with 48-pane sash, 2-light windows
above with recessed mullions, mullion of left window removed. Hipped roofs with
single ridge stack and one to rear pitch of master's house. School-room has
4-pane sash windows with plain-stone surrounds, originally cross-windows. Attached
to left block is added lean-to with doorway, window and tall lateral stack
(rendered). Right-hand return has paired doorways with overlights, tie-stone jambs
and chamfered surrounds to left of cross-window with 2-light window above both
with recessed mullions. Attached to right, added tall school-room has 3 bays of
2-light Tudor-style mullioned windows to left of doorway with moulded surround.
Coped gables with stack and bellcote. Other lower extension has two 4-light
chamfered windows and Westmorland green-slate roof.
