SD 9828SE HEPTONSTALL C.P. TOWN GATE (north side) Heptonstall 9/141 Nos. 40 and 42 (Stoodley View) -

2 houses. No. 42 was C18 crosswing attached at right angles to west end of Stag Cottage (q.v.). No. 40 is early C19 filling in the corner between and rebuilding the main range of the C16 house. Hammer-dressed stone, dressed quoins, stone slate roof. 2 storeys. No. 42 has gable which retains kneelers but lacks coping fronting street. Doorway with one monolithic jamb to left of altered wide window, over to 1st floor is former 4-light flat faced mullioned window retaining central mullion which is slightly recessed. No. 42 has doorway with tie-stone jambs to left of 3-light flat faced mullioned window formed by 2 square lights either side of narrow central sashed light. 5-light window over to 1st floor. One gable stack to right hand return wall. 2 lateral stacks to left hand return wall (of No. 42). Rear of No. 42 preserves double chamfered mullioned window to ground floor basement.
